28/08: Finds of the Day
We had a great, fast, busy day today. Thankfully, it all started with everyone getting up very late... about 10am. We had a relaxing breakfast and then went off the mountain. I will admit that we had not planned on going yard saleing this morning but I am glad that we did. We found some great items.
I picked up a great crib mobile for the baby. It's the old style that you wind up.... just what I had been looking for and couldn't find a new one at Any store. $3.00
Then we headed off the main road and came to a 4 family yard sale that was loaded with antiques. I am glad that I hadn't taken money with me. I would have come home with a stack of cast iron pans.... you can never have to many of those, ya know. ;)
I was able to pick up a nice chalk board and a case of chalk. I don't think we will ever use all of that chalk, which is fine by me. I just love homeschool supplies. $1.50
And the deal of the day... a mint condition antique travel play pen. I saw it and knew exactly what it was. it had no price on it and when I asked, the very nice woman said that she was offering it for a very reasonable price... $3.00

Generally speaking, there is never enough traffic on the mountain to have an unadvertised yard sale. So you run the risk of spending the money and no one showing up or no one handing over any cash for your stuff. However, once a year there is a day that everyone gets all of their stuff out for a "neighborhood" yard sale. The best part is that you don't have to advertise, the church down the street does that and brings all the folks who are more than willing to go through whatever you cared to put out for them..... and that day was today.
Sissy had been working on putting things out for several days to make sure that everything was set up ahead of time. Unfortunately, she only made $1.50 but she didn't complain.
Other than that the day was a success. We went shopping at the other sales and picked up some great stuff. Little Man and Curly both now have "new" bikes. Little Man also purchased for himself a giant chalk board. Munchkin even got a "new" swing. He has been needing something to entertain him.
Also, we had made arrangements for a very nice couple to come and get a bunny. We stood around chatting with them for quite some time. Then they were off and bunny went on an hour ride home to his new house. Hope that all goes well. :)

08/07: Loose Tooth
Curly has a loose tooth. She loves it! She sits with a mirror and watches as she wiggles it. She even called her friend Grace to let her know.
Did I mention that this is her first loose tooth?

28/05: Little Man On A Big Bike
Do I even need to tell this story?

21/02: Ice Skating
We were invited to a friend's birthday party at an ice skating arena..... so we went. What fun the girls had on the ice.
Sissy, being so tall, couldn't help holding on to the side to keep herself on her feet. Curly on the other hand had no fear of falling and was found most often in the center of the arena, as to stay out of the way of faster skaters.
I would include some pictures for illustration but they didn't turn out so well with all of the action and other skaters getting in the way. :)
There is a great picture that I have to share.... the cake. I love it! My friend made it and used a real Barbie with the legs taken off. How great is this idea?

We live just 15 min from Gettysburg Pa now so we decided to take a drive today. It worked out great, being Presidents Day, Daddy had the day off and the American Civil War Museum and Gettysburg Gift Center was open and free for the day.
We had to take the opportunity to stand next to a canon for a family picture (all but me, the bonus for being the photographer).

Sissy had a great time, the museum was great. The entire thing is a winding hall of life sized, period, scenes. Each one a three dimensional photograph of the people and places of the Civil War period. There were plaques detailing what the scenes were about and some had moving parts and audio to go along.
The only thing that I didn't like was that the entire thing made the Civil War about freeing slavery. Don't get me wrong, ending slavery was a bonus for the war but it isn't what the war was about. Perhaps they change the scenes to reflect different aspects of the war from time to time.
Overall, we had a great day with Daddy and that was just as great as going to a famous place!

30/01: Sledding On Ice.... How Fun!
We have ice covering everything and the girls thought that it would be fun to go sledding. The property is mostly flat but there is a small hill in the back.
The girls bundled up nice and warm and headed out. The ice was so thick that they couldn't break it when they walked and getting up the hill took some work.
Once they got up the hill they quickly found how much easier it was to slide down again... and how far they could go at the bottom.

Even ice is a blessing,
Mother Dean

Have you ever wondered what play time was like for our parents and grandparents? There were no video games or cartoons. They had to play with wooden blocks and paper dolls and things like that..... sounds perfect to me.
I have been on a search for old toys that were in good enough shape and reasonably priced so that the children could play with then on a regular basis. Here is one of my favorite finds.

I picked up two cans of American Logs at an antique store that belongs to a friend of mine. I couldn't have gotten a can of new, plastic Lincoln Logs for the price I paid for these... and they are actually wood.
Little Man plays for hours with these. You can see he has a collection of "cars" in front of him in the photo. Sissy is in the background with her cabin. What great fun!
Until next time,

08/01: Ice Covers Everything
We had a little sprinkle last night and then, when the temperatures dropped, everything froze. This morning we woke to the most beautiful crystal landscape. My pictures don't do it any justice.
